How to Care for Your Pointe Shoes

How to Care for Your Pointe Shoes

Pointe shoes are an investment, and if you take care of them properly, they’ll last longer and support your dancing better. At The Dance Shoppe, we know how important it is to keep your shoes in top shape, so here are some essential dos and don’ts to make the most of your pointe shoes.

Dos & Don’ts of Pointe Shoe Care

Do let your shoes dry out after class. Pointe shoes absorb sweat and moisture, which can break down the glue and weaken them. Always air them out in a well-ventilated space.

🚫 Don’t leave them in your dance bag. Tossing your shoes into a sweaty dance bag after class is a surefire way to shorten their lifespan. Instead, store them in a breathable mesh bag.

Do rotate between two pairs if possible. If you’re dancing frequently, alternating between two pairs allows each to fully dry and last longer.

🚫 Don’t bend or crush them unnecessarily. Breaking in your shoes the wrong way can weaken the structure and cause them to wear out too fast. Let them mold naturally to your feet.

Do use a pointe shoe hardener if needed. Special shellac or glue can help reinforce softening areas and prolong their lifespan. Ask us at The Dance Shoppe for recommendations!

🚫 Don’t wash your pointe shoes. Water will break down the glue and ruin them. Instead, use a damp cloth to spot-clean any dirt or scuffs.

How to Store Your Pointe Shoes Properly

Proper storage is just as important as how you wear them. When you’re not dancing, keep your pointe shoes in a mesh bag to allow airflow. If they’re damp, stuff them with paper towels to absorb excess moisture.
