Getting a brand-new pair of pointe shoes is exciting, but they’re not performance-ready right out of the box. Breaking them in properly ensures they mold to your feet while providing the right balance of support and flexibility. At The Dance Shoppe, we want to help you get the most out of your shoes, so here’s a guide to breaking them in the right way!
Why Breaking in Pointe Shoes Matters
Pointe shoes are made of layers of fabric, glue, and satin, designed to support your feet while en pointe. If they’re too stiff, they can be uncomfortable and difficult to dance in. But if they’re broken in incorrectly, they may lose support too quickly and wear out before you get the most use out of them.
How to Break in Your Pointe Shoes Safely
🏡 Wear Them Around the House – Before even stepping into the studio, wear your pointe shoes with socks at home. Walk around on demi-pointe to gently soften the box and shank.
🦶 Work Through Demi-Pointe – While sitting, point and flex your feet with your shoes on. This naturally loosens the shank without over-bending it.
👐 Use Your Hands – Carefully massage the box and bend the shank slightly with your hands to start the softening process. Focus on areas where your foot naturally bends.
🩰 Do Barre Work First – Use your new shoes for barre exercises before jumping into center work. This allows them to mold to your feet gradually.
🔨 Gentle Hammering – If your box feels too hard, lightly tap it with a hammer to soften it—but don’t crush it!
🧼 Dampen the Box (Only If Needed) – Some dancers lightly wet the toe box with rubbing alcohol or water to soften it. If you try this, use a small amount and avoid over-saturating the fabric.
What NOT to Do When Breaking in Pointe Shoes
🚫 Don’t Step on Them – Some dancers stand on their shoes to flatten the box, but this can damage the structure and reduce support.
🚫 Don’t Over-Bend the Shank – Forcing the shank to bend too quickly can weaken it, making the shoe unstable. Let your foot do the work over time.
🚫 Don’t Cut the Shank (Unless Recommended) – Some professionals modify their shoes, but beginners should avoid cutting anything without a fitter’s advice.
🚫 Don’t Use Heat – Heating your shoes with a blow dryer or microwave can weaken the glue, shortening their lifespan.
